What Is The Definition of Happiness & Contentment?
09.30.03 (8:04 pm)   [edit]

10.17am

Sometimes you look back and wonder what have you achieved so far. On days like that, some might be really proud, while other will feel down. What is it that really makes a person happy & contented? Is there even a definite answer to that question?

I feel that on & off, I'm being compared to others. Or maybe it's me that comparing myself with others. I don't know... What I know is that in doing so, I'm making myself depress for no particular reason. So there are some people out there who're doing a lot better than me. Promotions, increments etc. What about me? Minimal increment, no sign of promotion(in my dept, can't really promote to anywhere since there's only 4 of us...). Hey, I work hard too, don't I deserve those as well? You see where I'm getting at? I'm comparing... and comparing is not good. It only makes me feel bad about myself.

So what is the definition of happiness & contentment? Am I happy? Looking beyond all the material, yea, I can say I am happy :) My health is fine, no broken bones whatsoever, I'm not in debt (not yet anyway, my house installment hasn't started), no loan sharks calling me, no bank officers calling me too. Plus I have a loving boyfriend who treasures me like a diamond (he likes to pamper me, eventhough he knows he's spoiling me )

If true happiness & contentment is about being healthy & happy with what you presently have, why do some people chase that certain "something" which they claim will make them "happier" or "richer"? I know someone, a friend of mine since high school... she's constantly comparing herself with others, and she vows to be better than all her friends. Is she happy? She's happy to know she's better than me (or any one of her friends). Even during our final high school exams, when we got our results, she called me up at home just to ask how many distinctions I got. She obtained more distinctions than me, but I was satisfied with my results cos I know I also worked hard. Yes, she's smarter than me, she works hard also. But will she ever realise that there's always "someone" else better than her, somewhere out there? So, in the end... will my friend ever find true happiness? We'll never know...

What Is The Definition of Happiness & Contentment? Think about it for a while...

It's Tuesday, boredom has set in. Yea, I have work to do... but lazy larrr... how how??

Nothing much to write today. Maybe tomorrow... or the day after... or another week or so... Haven't watched movie in a while... must go see what's on. I missed Pirates :( But I have downloaded LOTR - Return of The King trailer. So damn cool! Must watch, must watch

There's one thing I really don't like about working in my current company. Smoking. Yup, you heard it right the 1st time - I hate smoking. I hate the habit, I hate the smelly, stinky smoke that comes with it. And I hate how some people (smokers) can be so inconsiderate as to smoke INSIDE to washroom!!! Everyday, I have to endure the smoke. I go home reeking of ciggie smoke. Mind you, the entire floor is a non-smoking section. Smokers have to go out and stand at the staircase if they wanna puff. But some choose to hide inside the washrooms and stink the whole place, in addition to disposing their remaining ciggie into the toilet bowl...

Every year, the government increases the ciggie tax. Good move I say, but that's not gonna stop people from cutting down on smoking. And some smokers have really bad habits like smoking in public places, and throwing the ciggie butts everywhere. I'm not against smokers mind you. I have several friends & colleagues who smoke. I'm just against the cigaratte. Smoking isn't a healthy habit, to smokers and non-smokers alike. My opinion: Smoking isn't the least bit cool. Same goes for drugs. It's unhealthy, it's not wise, it's not cool, and it shortens our already short life. :?

The weekend is here!!!

10.25am

Yessss!!! The weekend is here. Ok, so I still have to be in the office until 1pm, but who cares!!! Nobody really works on a Saturday... It's actually a waste of time & money to work on a Saturday cos you can't really get much done. Waste of time cos you can use to weekend to doother stuff: like go to the bank, do some grocery shopping. Waste of money cos all the lights, air conditioning and PCs are on, but it's not like we're gonna stare at the screen the whole time until 1pm. Yup, the weekend is here 8)

Yeahhh!!! The photos are finally developed!!! I'm going off now... see see??? Waste of time to work on Saturdays... nobody works!!! LOL

Besar or Kecil???

I'm in the midst of a disagreement with a close friend as to where to stay for our next beach retreat. A group of us are planning for a beach retreat to Perhentian Island, Terengganu. For those who have never heard of it, it's in the east coast of Malaysia. Yea, I'm Malaysian. Perhentian Island is one of the best island retreats. Clear waters, white sandy beaches, just pure relaxation from the hustle & bustle of city life 8)

We're now scouting for a nice resort to stay in. Perhentian Island consist of 2 islands - Besar (big) and Kecil (small). We've never been there before, so each of us heard different advices from our own friends of course... My friend insisted we stay in Long Beach, Perhentian Kecil - it's said to be a "happening" beach with beer and stuff. Lotsa foreigners too, hence all the hype. What I didn't really like was that since it's so popular among tourists, the price is bound to be higher than expected, and the amount of people around... crowded... And crowded beaches usually mean "not-so-clean beaches". Where else, I found this new resort in Perhentian Besar. Nice & new, clean as well, not as happening, but more privacy. So we're in the midst of a slight bickering  Hehe...

Dang the monitor...

My monitor is flickering again... dang... where is the admin guy when you need him. My 21 inch monitor is way too heavy for my skinny petite body to carry. I need some muscles to help me switch to another monitor. I haven't been doing much work the whole morning *ssshhhh* Was finding some information about a resort in Perhentian Island. I'm planning a trip there with some close friends of mine. This is to make up for the lousy Phuket trip I had recently... LOL  I hope to hear from the travel agent soon... It's been raining every evening. The 9 Emperor Festival is closing in, hence the daily rain. If you're a chinese, you'll understand what the festival is all about

Phuket 19 - 22 Sept, 2003

Got back from Phuket yesterday evening. Let's just say that the trip was generally not fun. In short, it was a wet & miserable trip. Out of the 4 days, 3 days we got rain :( Talk about going to an island for rain... What an irony. On the only day where there was no rain, we got fooled into parting about RM100 to go to some island for a snorkelling trip. Trust me, our very own M'sian Redang Island is anytime better lah. Pay 100 bucks, and I suffered on the boat ride... vomitted... and I suffered for the rest of the day... like my head is still floating on water... Shopping wasn't exactly fruitful. Of course we bought some stuff, but Haadyai/Bangkok has more stuff to offer. And cheaper too. And the rooms... oh my... were they crap man. The worset part was the organiser and his own group of people stayed in the fancy wing, while the rest of us stayed in crappy rooms... freaking asshole :x A real thick skin fella, and not afraid to show it. We are all glad to be back home... Phuket was so-so. If you're a drinker, then that's the place for you. If not... then go find your own activity... but if people tell you how great Phi Phi Island is, you can skip it
